The Process
So, how does this whole thing work? Magic? Alchemy? It's done on a computer so you just click a button? Eh...not quite.
My painting process is very similar to how a traditional artist paints or draws. Instead of a pencil and paper or paintbrush and canvas, I use a stylus and drawing tablet. The application I choose to actually create the art is Adobe Photoshop. There are many applications out there for digital painting and they all work in a similar way.
The following steps outline how I choose to work. There are many artists who do use filtering and smudging techniques, which is based on manipulating a photo to eventually look like a painting. I simply choose not to work that way and enjoy the more traditional method.
So...first, you send me the best quality photo you can of your pet. The bigger, the better with the highest resolution possible. If you have a picture that is not the best quality, then also send me pictures that show more detail so I can reference them to give a more accurate rendering.
Then, I take that picture into Photoshop to get an accurate outline of all the major features and markings.

Then I put base colors down that are a rough estimate of the colors in the photo.
In the next few passes, I keep adding more and more detail. I'll first refine the colors, then begin to add detail.
Then, lastly, I add the final details, such as highlights, whiskers and any stray hairs. I may also do some color correction at this point.
I will send you a low resolution watermarked version of the final image. Once you approve it, I'll send you the high resolution digital file. From there, you can have it printed anywhere you want. You can make canvas prints, put it on mugs or mouse pads, anything you'd like.
